I so agree. Pirates is the best -- all of her first three or four albums
were worth having. But then a year or two (whenever it came out) I bought
Ghoastyhead and was horrified. How could they put that out? I thought
Rickie Lee was off drugs? I have a great deal of tolerance for weirdness (I
like most of Jane Siberry, and pretty much all of Kate Bush), but sheesh,
shouldn't one be conscious during a recording session? Doesn't she have a
producer/adviser? I wonder about such things. She had such great talent,
and I hope she's okay.

Hi, everyone.
Can't tell you how much I'm enjoying this site/list, and getting responses,
and meeting you individually on the net.
I assume you all saw the Special Night with Joni thing that was on one of the
cable channels (can't remember which at the moment) about a year and a half
ago. Aside from Joni's own outstanding performance of BSN, whcih was farily
similar to the performance on the BSN album, she was preceeded by the
excellent Diana Krall, who reduced me to tears with her seemingly
(appropriately) drunk performance of Case of You, belied by her incredible,
jazzy, expert piano playing. Anyway, I watch this tape often, whicn I need a
good smile or cry (it's the same relief, no?). Other highlights for me were
the performances by Shawn Colvin and Beth Chapman (something missing from the
latter's name, I know, but I can't pull it out right now... Nielsen?? --
anyway, are those two lovers or just buds), and their trio performance with
JT, and his solo performance of River (with interestingly missing lyrics
about making one's lover cry...hmmm).
Back in '95 I heard on San Fran's KFOG a re-broadcast of a small concert Joni
had doen in LA. There was one song I didn't at that time recognize. Now I'm
thinking it may have been Man from Mars, but I'm not sure. Anybody know the
tape I mean, and what song it was?
I understand from this site or from Wally Breese's jonimitchell.com that
there is some kind of tribute album in the works (not the jazz thing by David
Lahm, which I just learned about and intend to find next time I'm in a Virgin
or Tower). Anybody know anything about the tribute album? Certainly hope
Colvin, Chapman and Krall are involved!!!
On a more frustrating note, I have TWICE caught the second half of an
hour-long performance by joni for a small group in Toronto (I gather from the
credits) for Canadian TV. Once was my fault, and the other was KQED's (local
PBS in SF), for (brace yourself) jumping in in the middle of the performance
because they were pledging, and trying to sell some crap by some self-help
guru!!!!
Ugh, to say the least. So I still have no idea what's on the first half hour
of the set. Oh, the local TV guide listing said the performance was from
200, but the credits revealed otherwise. She did perform Facelift
(wonderful! -- one of my favorites of all time) from Tiger, and Comes Love
(Nothing Can Be Done) from BSN, but Facelift was written back in '95, and
Come Love might have been something her ex and now friend, Larry K, brought
to her attention some time back to lure her into considering what later led
to BSN.
Finally (and sorry to all of you for whom this is all old news), any idea
what Joni's next album is about thematically, or whether she's even working
on one, or when we might expect it, hmmmm?

George admitted that he probably inadvertently copied the song which is
one reason he might have lost the case. Unlike you I find the songs very
similar. Too similar to be anything but a subconscious copy. Usually if
you
do a conscious rip off job you change the song enough that you know you
will get away with it. The Beatles were masters of this.

I got turned on to her back in Lubbock in the early 80's. I had only heard
Chuck E's in love on the radio and thought she was kind of squirrelly too. My
good friend Jeff had her album though and we used to lie around getting stoned
and trying to find ourselves and that album was so great. Have you heard the
song "company". Doesn't get any better than that. Was getting over a broken
heart at the time or trying to and that tune would just break my heart all
over again. Jeff used to play Joni all the time too but I didn't think much
of her then but later learned the error of my thinking. But that Rickie Lee,
she takes me away. Try to find the album Girl at her volcano. Hard to find

Walt, I think this is the shortened (hour-long only)
version of "Painting with Words and Music" that the
CBC ran around the same time the PWWAM ran in the U.S.
We Canadians lost out on that one, unfortunately. It
wasn't filmed in Canada - in fact, some of the jmdlers
were there (was it in LA? SF? I dunno.) Anyway, you
can get the video of PWWAM through places like CDNow,
Amazon.com and so on.

I'm not sure if anyone is familiar with the R&B singer/songwriter Aliyah, but
I think anyone would be saddened by the turn of events that happened with her
plane crash this past Saturday.
I had just watched an MTV show called "Diary" which featured her story the
previous week. It gave me a chance to see what a vibrant, positive person she
was. Aliyah would also be heard saying how thankful she was to do something
she loved so much, and how grateful she was to her fans. No matter how tired
she was, she always made time to acknowledge those waiting to see her. She
had a beautiful, soft, and sultry voice which I admired. I also admired the
fact that she was only 22 years old and a commercial success for 8 years. I
used to question why some people are successes at early ages and now I know
why. Sometimes, a long life is not promised. It is a great argument for
living in the moment. Aliyah did that as much as anyone could. It's very hard
not to be touched by her after watching one of her interviews or
documentaries. I was devastated by the news. It just reminds me of the fact
that tomorrow is promised to no one.

the study of the field of patristics (first few centuries, the period of the
early church fathers), the direction of angelo roncalli (john xxiii), the
second vatican council and its documents, albino luciani (johnpaul I),
ecumenical anglicans and lutherans...all have remarkable harmony that:
a kind of primate with reduced powers is envisaged, a kind of 'president'

episcopal checks to the 'presidential' power (term limits, powers of
impeachment etc)...
such studies indicate this is closer to the way it was meant to be...including
the reformation principle that there is no higher authority than Holy
Scripture....not anywhere on earth at least!

Would this have been the show recorded at the Gene Autry Museum? Did Joni
do a long, rambling, funny intro about playing war with the boys in her
neighborhood? She played "Love's Cries" at that show, an early (and IMO
opinion better) version of "Crazy Cries of Love." Perhaps that was the song
you don't recognize?)

This one is news to me. It sort of sounds like "Painting with Words and
Music," but that was recorded in LA. She did a MuchMusic "Intimate and
Interactive" show shortly after the release of TI, but that show does not
include "Comes Love." I'm stumped.
(Walt) In the one I'm talking about, she even dances with a friend from the
audience (someone she knows, in fact, one of the three who sang "Why do fools
fall in love" with her earlier in the broadcast -- everyone in the audience
was a friend or an invitee by a friend. ) Also during the show in question,
Graham Nash gave her the award/trophy/thingy that he had accepted for her the
year before when she'd been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The
show was LISTED as being "Pianting with Word and Music" by KQED, but since
they got the year wrong, and I neer saw the beginning, I was doubtful.

I can't claim to be an Aliyah fan but I certainly know her music and the
news of her death, and the others on the plane, is very sad. She was a
young woman with a lot of talent and a lot of promise who had done some
very good work over a period of time. Rather akin to the loss of
Richie Valens or Eddie Cochran or Cass Elliot.

i have literally seen this movie 100s of times. i still remember seeing
it as a toddler in the movie theatre a couple of times when it first
came out, and to this day, watch it at least 5x a year (i've already
reached my quota - i got the DVD just a few weeks before i went to paris
and watched it dubbed in french a few times to try to get my vocabulary
back). i was a foster parent of two kids about 10 years ago, and one of
them had a real penchant for the movie - i think it put her in a fantasy
world that gave her some comfort. she used to watch it about every
other day, no exaggeration. it truly is a classic movie. it has its
really corny parts, but overall, it's really fabulous. the acting is
amazing, and i think christopher plummer is overlooked for how much he
brings to the film [not to mention just how incredibly sexy he is].
looking beyond the music, i think it's the captain's growth as a
character that makes the film what it is.
early this summer, i taught for the first time, which was really fun
(editing theory at american university). it renewed my passion for
filmmaking and reminded me of why i got into this crazy business in the
first place. the first day of class, i dissected the scene between the
captain and maria when they fight after he's returned from vienna and
they all fall out of the boat. a couple of my students told me later
that when i started with that they were rolling their eyes and thinking
that they might have made a huge mistake enrolling in my class, but by
the end of the lecture were completely fascinated and surprised by how
complex the scene actually is. even i was surprised when i started
preparing for class and took it apart. it seems like a very staged,
mostly wide/2-shot/master shot kind of scene, but there are more than 45
cuts in 2 minutes. i highly recommend taking the time to listen to the
director's track if you've got the DVD.

I agree whole heartedly about Rickie, and especially about the song Company.
I've seen Rickie live numerous times, but one time I saw her at the now defunct Poplar
Creek Theater, and she did a version of Company that left me sobbing like a baby. It
was the most emotional reading of a song I have ever witnessed.
Three or four songs later, she was playing a much more lively song (I wish I could
remember which one) and I just had to get up and dance, even though the rest of the
audience remained seated. I was in about the fourth row, and half way through the
song, the band went into a instrumental part, and Rickie jumps off the stage, comes
running up to me, drags me in the aisle, and dances with me for a couple of minutes
while the band jammed away. A magic night for sure!
Which reminds me of another favorite Rickie moment. I was seeing her at a small
concert hall on a Chicago campus, and dragged a friend along who I thought might
appreciate her. She was touring with a very small band, and the whole evenings
performance was very laid back, and my friend wasn't overly impressed. For her final
encore, she did an accapella version of some song I never heard before, but it had
something to do with a couple meeting in a bar, and cigarettes - I wish I could
remember more. Anyway, half way through the song, she messes up, and shouts "Damn, I
fucked it up - Now I'll have to start the whole thing over". And in the process of
starting it over, she completely re-interpretted the song. It was simply amazing.
But what was even more amazing was my friend's reaction - "God, she not only fucked up
the song the first time, but then she couldn't even remember the melody when she sang
it the second time".
If anybody happens to know the song I am referring to here, I would greatly appreciate
hearing from you.

I'm a huge fan of both Dionne's and of Burt's (hard if you're one not to be
the other), so I intend to see esp. tue & fri nites

Thank you, A-R! I guess despite the discrepancies, it must be PWWAM. The
credits do seem to suggest to me -- as fast as they've gone by, I may have
misinterpreted them -- that it was a Canadian TV Production, but maybe
they're just grabbing credit for their hown-grown here. :-)

I know what you mean about the coming home experience. When I joined
years ago the discussion at the time was about "The Reoccurring Dream".
It seemed to go on forever and evolved into a heated argument about why
Joni used the word "reoccurring" rather than "occurring". I was amazed
that so many people not only knew the song but felt so passionately
about it they were arguing about her use of one particular word.
Aahhhhh! I felt like a fish diving into life-giving water. It wasn't
just me and Joni anymore.

one of the great advantages of going to a catholic school was that we got to
see the sound of music every year!!!! i own the movie and i watch it once
every two months. it still moves me and makes me laugh. i love the
captain!!!!!!! and i know most of the dialogues by heart. one of the things
that i wanted to do at the jonifest this year was ''how do you solve a
problem like maria'', the scene with the nuns and the abbess. i wanted to do
it with chris, les ross, russ, bob, and jimmy. i wanted to be sister
margareta, the one that says, ''i'd like to say a word in her behalf: maria
makes me laugh [giggle giggle giggle]'' but i forgot to tell the guys and
now it's too late. so it is such a coincidence that we should be discussing
the S of M now!
