Hey y'all!
I remember buying Rickie Lee's first album back in 1979. At that time I
thought she was good, but no match for Joni or Laura Nyro or Tom Waits.
Since then, thanks to the generosity of Mark D. and my great friend Ric
Welch, I've learned to appreciate the art of Rickie Lee.
I've also read and re-read Rickie Lee's Rolling Stone interview in which she
disses Joni quite badly. Mingus hadn't even come out yet, and here was
Rickie Lee criticizing it.
For many years, that pissed me off. It doesn't any more. After all, so many
great songs have been written by insecure people.
Rickie Lee also did her best in that Rolling Stone interview to bring
attention to Joan Armatrading. I don't understand the neglect of Joan
Armatrading, one of the greatest guitarists ever, any more than I understand
the neglect of Laura Nyro.
