Kakki, I take no offense at all. I am no expert on Afghanistan & have been
learning much lately including as you mention, our support of the Taliban &
Bin Laden vs. Russia. Before last week's tragedy, all I knew about
Afghanistan was of the atrocious way women were treated there which was
pretty common knowledge.

But how do you view this piece as irresponsible? And why must it be current?
I posted it as another example of how the US government has in the past
funded the Taliban that I had just become aware of.

This was the main point that I found disturbing: "the recent gift of $43
million to the Taliban rulers of Afghanistan, the most virulent
anti-American violators of human rights in the world today. The gift,
announced last Thursday by Secretary of State Colin Powell, in addition to
other recent aid, makes the U.S. the main sponsor of the Taliban and rewards
that "rogue regime" for declaring that opium growing is against the will of
God."

So are you saying this $43 million was provided to the Taliban to turn over
Bin Laden to us, not to be used to stop them from growing opium?

I am more than happy to hear other points of view on this. As I said I am
just reading & learning as I go...just like most of the rest of us.

Please take no offense, but this is a very irresponsible piece by Scheer,
and not current seeing how it was written back in May...Officially we
sanction them, but unofficially, for several years now, we have been
back-dooring, under different guises, this kind of money to them. It is
hard to say if it is for humanitarian purposes, but it is probably safe to
say, as many in our government are now acknowledging, that it has been
"incentive" for them to turn Bin Laden over to us.
