Laurent asked: >Since I love the 60's and your selection, I was wondering if you could >please tell me about the 3 artists I've never heard of: Dave Carter & Tracy >Grammer, Gillian Welch and Steve Gillette.
Gosh, Laurent, nice to see you writing about something besides politics! :) Steve Gillette was a young Orange County, CA singer songwriter when he recorded that album for Vanguard in 1967. It contains his two best-known songs, "Darcy Farrow" and "Back On the Street Again". Steve is still active on the folk scene, and is a wonderful performer - in fact (plug) he'll be at my concert series next March. There is a Joni connection - the same photographer shot both Steve's and Joni's first album covers. Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer are a youngish duo out of Portland, OR. Dave writes, sings, plays guitar and banjo, Tracy plays fiddle, guitar, mando and sings. There songs are like no others out there. Dave is in touch with some very deep places - think "Slouching Toward Bethlehem." One of their songs, "Gentle Arms of Eden" tells the history of life on earth - in 4 verses. Also terrific people and performers. Gillian Welch (along with her partner David Rawlings) has written some amazingly old-timey sounding songs. She is dialled in to rural, depression, dust bowl, WWII and fifties America like no one else. They will knock your socks off live.
