Didn't the director Robert Altman just say something very similar? Certainly it's not a complete answer, but interesting to think about. If America is seen to be exporting violence via film and music, it's certainly not because we are more violent than the rest of the world. If Belgium were the film capital of the world, Belgium would be exporting violence via film. Violence sells, icky as that is.
