Could it be that Christmas in Joni's songs always seems "too sad"? (River, Face lift...) Though in Face lift there's an amazing view of lights and love as seen from the room and in the room - the song begins with Joni's feeling numb, and the Christmas gifts seem like a part in a mother-daughter fight. There's this old and familiar feeling (in both songs) that it's no good being alone in that time of year. That everyone is with their families and lovers - while Joni is somewhat in the dark.
