I definitely agree here Bob.  I know that in the past I used to record
changing the lyrics from "he" to "she" when supposedly necessary to
appear "normal" but I've grown to believe that a writer's lyrics should
usually be sung the way they were written.  Women have been doing this
for years (singing songs in the man's persona), but there seems to have
been a stigma against other men saying "he", which perhaps comes from a
somewhat homophobic society.  Being such a fan of Laura Nyro and Joni,
and having done many of their songs through the years, guess I just
decided to leave well enough alone!!!  I have an old recording I did of
Laura's "Tom Cat Goodby" that I did back in the '70s and I didn't change
a word.  Even sang it in the clubs that way.  I loved the song and there
just wasn't a better way to do it!!
