It's interesting. I had always assumed she did that because she
wanted people to think (or not) about her sexuality/gender. Maybe I am
wrong. Like JK Rowling the author of the Harry Potter books..she was
told by her publisher that 'Joanne' Rowling would never sell books to
boys so they abbreviated it to JK. I remember the first time I heard
kd lang...I was not really sure if it was a man or woman singing? But
maybe that says more about my musical ability than anything else..lol

what I was specifically referring to as pretentious was the lower-case
spelling rather than the initials themselves. Can anyone tell me why in the
world she chooses to use lower-case? I believe her actual name is Katherine
Dawn Lang, if I'm not mistaken.
While I personally don't think she sounds like a man (although she does
remind me of Wayne Newton :-D), I know what you mean. When I was a kid, I
always assumed Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit" and "Somebody To Love"
were sung by a man. It wasn't until several years later that I learned it was
a female named Grace Slick. I still think her aggressive tone and phrasing on
those tracks is rather masculine sounding.
