Hi! All this talk of covering has been interesting and of course
timely...that synchronicity thing again I suppose. I have been doing a
little bit of studying the evolution of American music and have been wonding
about the term 'covering'. The first time I seem to notice it used is after
WWII when black artists were starting to be 'covered' by whites (early rock
& roll) and the white person that covered them was the one who the song was
usually associated with, not the original writer. This was very common and
it would make sense that the term originated in this time but I was
wondering if anyone knows anything more about this or if my speculation is
true.
