a day of great tension as bombs were found and dismantled in two public buildings yesterday. a few minutes ago, the dogs in my neighborhood were brusquely awakened by gunshot. they've been barking and howling for a while now.
these sudden attacks have become customary as many in the population seek ways to denounce newly appointed president [appointed by whom?] duhalde. the peso has begun its free fall. the currency devaluated some 40% yesterday, which roughly means that your money today buys a little more than half of what it could buy a few hours ago. medicines and other dollar-denominated products are conspicuous by their absence. all the dvd players, all the computer supplies and, more important yet, all the imported stuff that we depended on after our national industry was cannibalized by the overvalued peso have vanished from the store shelves. everybody is holding on to whatever tangible assets he or she has: now that our currency has finally begun its way to the twilight zone, a cd or a washing machine has become a precious object. thanks for listening, dear family. wally
