Colin,
I'm afraid this documentary is nonsense.  Perhaps what they meant is that
orthodox jews never  proselytized  and they don't approve of insincere
conversions for marriage purposes so they really make it difficult to
convert (unless you're a big contributor, LOL).  However, once you're
converted you have exactly the same rights, privileges and obligations as
one who is born in the faith.  We never forget that Ruth was herself a
convert.
As Nuriel said, conversions occur everyday.
