Yes Hattie McDaniel won best supporting actress for GWTW and Whoopi Goldberg also won this award for 'Ghost'. However, Halle Berry is the very first black woman to win Best Actress. Ever. It dawned on me what had happened as she got up to get her award. It was a very moving moment. Now if we can just get to the point where we don't have to draw these kinds of distinctions anymore.
