Claire's aunt gave it to her because the tape was playing in the morning when Claire came in, and Claire said, "that's pretty". So as a spontaneous gift Aunt Sarah gave Claire the tape. (You know... share the music, share the joy... very jonilisty... Bob-Muller-like even :-)
The Mom was just curious... and since she's jealous of her sister and the tape was labeled Sarah's Songs, she seemed compelled to play it. Obviously Mr. Rose is not a joni fan... too bad for him, eh?
