> I thought this might be the place to ask this
question. I am starting to get back into songwriting
again, and am wanting to try a couple of open tunings
in my song-writing. I was wondering what the tuning
for open Gminor is as well as a few basic chord shapes
for that is. I was also wondering about some basic
chords in DADGAD tuning. Any help will be much
appreciated.

Hi James.

I don't know what Gm tuning is, but I do play a lot in
DADGAD. (Are you familiar with Pierre Bensusan, by any
chance? He usually plays in DADGAD - fabulous
guitarist...)

Anyway, I've found that since playing in open tuinings
can allow for so much variety, I don't try to
'translate' from standard tuning to open tunings. One
thing that you might find interesting is to try to play
chord shapes you know while in an alternate tuning.
Move the shape up and down the neck. Take a finger off
here, add one there, and see what things sound like.
I'd bet anything that's how Joni approaches it.

Don't be worried if it's frustrating at first. I
remember thinking about DADGAD "You can't play ANYTHING
in this tuning!" Well, of course, you can...

Good luck and I hope this helps.

lots of love
Anne
