Denny, The point I was trying to make was are we, as Americans, willing to give up some freedom to help guarantee our safety. I think maybe Kakki said it best that let's not create something new, but revamp the systems already in place.
As far as the WTC goes, to me this day, I feel personally threatened to know that civilian targets are "fair game". I did agree with your comment that the Constitution is what sets us apart, but did the terrorists find the original copy and burn it? You wrote: >spying on one another, prying into one's library record, food selections, favorite >bumper stickers, etc. while seeming to be obvious, just aren't going to make the >measure, IMHO. Of course you know this already occurs to some extent. You are on a magazine subscription list, your library account is computerized, when you shop at the market if you use the store's built in "coupon catcher" bar code they know who you are and what you are buying, every time you drive to another state a picture is taken of your liscense plate, Hell, even when you go through the toll booths in Chicago they film whether or not you throw the correct change into the basket! I think back to what Wally said about his Argentina, the reason things had gone so bad was that for years apathy had ruled. My point was that we lost so much on September 11th; are we willing to roll up our sleves and realize that we all have some work to do regarding homeland security? Whether it be lobbying our congress or writing letters to Ashcroft, now is the time to be active.
