Kate, Of all the various groups on the spectrum I've observed on this issue it has been the conservative republicans who have been the most apoplectic about, and ragingly opposed to TIPs. They make the commentary here on Ashcroft pale in comparison. True conservatives also often agree with, and work together with the ACLU, significantly along the same lines, to continue to fight against the Carnivore program (fought for and approved by Clinton and Janet Reno) which has given the FBI and the government the power and ability to read all our emails looking for suspected criminal activity for about 3 years now. This is not just something people are debating - they have been doing it, just like rifling through our mailboxes, all this time. The fight continues... here's an ACLU link if you are interested
