You're right, John. It was Linus.  Another lister
looked up the quote and found it attributed to both
Linus and Charles Schultz. Now that I remember, my
sister's sweatshirt had a picture of Linus on it and
the words, "I love mankind. It's people I can't
stand."  Mine had a picture of Charlie Brown but I
can't remember what it said. (I liked my sister's
shirt better, of course, ain't that always the way?)
