After seeing a client today, I was writing up my notes in the common room where I see clients, and another counsellor, Andrew, came along and said hello. We started chatting about music, and Joni Mitchell came up (obviously). He mentioned that he'd seen her in concert at Wembley Arena. I immediately assumed that this must have been in 1982, her last tour here, as he doesn't look old enough to have seen her earlier. But no, he said it was the late 70s. Short pause, before he delivered himself of the following bombshell:
"My friend and me were on our way up there on the tube [Underground], and there was this woman sitting opposite who looked just like Joni. We were nudging each other and saying 'maybe it's her', 'nah, couldn't be', etc etc. Then at Wembley station she got up to get off too, smiled at us and said 'maybe I AM her!' " I can't repeat my reply to Andrew, as it's rude. Can you believe that Joni was travelling on public transport, to her own gig, in a particularly insalubrious part of London, on her own?? That's it, really. Azeem in London NP: Sneaker Pimps - Becoming X
