martha is almost certainly martha graham.  modern dance is spiralling
downward toward insignificance these days in america, and certainly on this
list, but in joni's early formative years, martha graham mattered so deeply.
and her dogged independence as a female artist would have inspired joni as
well, as much as georgia o'keeffe's.

and martha, joni, and georgia had identical cheekbones...
