where is Herbie Hancock?

The use of Herbie is interesting. 1st time thru I just heard him on Be Cool.
But after repeated listening he seems to be used as a colorist - Example:
SOS "You're stumbling in shadows" there is a quick, jagged piano chord
stumbling.
I have found other examples that escape me at the moment. He's mixed in the
background with the orchestra, not up front like Shorter.
