the returns is probably the greatest masterpiece ever written (all right,
you all know my tendency to hyperbole). but that voice, that voice... when
she says the second ''so close'' you think she's about to break into a
million pieces.
long before i had a cd player, i made a tape of rickie's most melancholy
songs:
on saturday afternoons in 1963
after hours
skeletons
the returns
deep space
i recorded them in that sequence over and over, on both sides of the tape.
of course, nowadays i just program and press repeat.
try it if you dare.

Wow. I haven't heard Rickie Lee Jones' Pirates in so many years. What a
rush.
It hit me in the belly. Isn't this one of the best albums ever?
Remember the last track?

the returns
music and lyrics by Rickie Lee Jones

...but after all
there are such things
and these are the things
who'll turn your memories back into dreams again
Oh, it's all flying and waving
for you to keep trying
you're so close.
So close.
all the returns
one of these days,
one of these days,
one of these days,
one of these days.
