If you look at the vast majority of the pre-rock era standards, they're mostly theatre show tunes. While show tunes still become standards today, I would imagine that the shift has been towards pop songs (like Yesterday, Both Sides Now, The Times They Are A-Changing) becoming standards as opposed to show tunes. It will be interesting to see 25-30 years from now which songs are still being recorded and which have been laid to rest.
