Somehow I think of "songstress" as not being the same
as "singer", disregarding the whole gender thing. I
think of it as having some kind of strings attached -
like, a singer who is larger than life, or over the
top, sort of a diva wannabe. To me there's almost a
humourous connotation to the word, but I can't define
why. (Sometimes I call my pets cattess and doggess
because I like the sound - after all, there are
tigresses and lionesses. Or then again, they could be
she-cats and the she-dog.)
