A drone would work, but I've been working on a harmonization of my own using Joni's actual track as the foundation. I do hear implied harmonies in there. It's not finished yet, but I think it will be very cool when it is. And it's interesting that you mention raga, because my inspiration for this idea came from a track on Indian musician Trilok Gurtu's album "Usfret," on which his mother sings a wonderful solo line which he harmonizes with synths, in a manner kind of reminiscent of Joe Zawinul or Lyle Mays.
