Consider mapping in remote areas using portable device such as netbook. 1) Download appropriate area using josm and save osm file. 2) Collect gps data until handheld gps device full: at end of day (in tent?) transfer tracks from gps to netbook. Edit local osm file using josm. No net connection. 3) Iterate for several days.
