I just released jQuery Metadata 2.1, which adds support for HTML5 data-*.
Usage:
<p id="one" class="some_class" data-item_id="1"
data-item_label="Label">This is a p</p>;
$.metadata.setType("html5")
$("#one").metadata().item_id == 1;
$("#one").metadata().item_label == "Label";
