There is one other solid argument for keeping jquery filesize down: dial-up 
modem is one part of  reality, costly internet surfing via mobile phone 
connection (gprs, wap ...) is another one, which also should increase in the 
future.

Sorry, your right - it's been so long since I've had dialup and it's still 
early on a friday, i didn't do my math right.

Even so, I still stick to my 'magic' number.  Our company normally deals with 
large images and photos, but I always optimize them as much as possible (the 
average 3.7mb photo, I reduced down to 65kb at
800x533) to display on the site - although I provide a link to the high-res 
image if required.  I've seen plenty sites that don't bother, and even on 
broadband the page can take ages to load.

Add on top of this uncompressed, large JS libraries, some sites can feel like 
i'm back on a 14.4kb diaup.
