I tried all the following and get no alerts:

    $("select").keyup(function() {
      alert("here1");
    });
    $("select").keydown(function() {
      alert("here2");
    });
    $("select").keypress(function() {
      alert("here3");
    });
    $("select").mousedown(function() {
      alert("here4");
    });
    $("select").mouseout(function() {
      alert("here5");
    });
    $("select").mouseup(function() {
      alert("here6");
    });
