[jQuery] Autofocus to next textbox

I know this has been discussed in the list but I can't seem to get the
solutions to work.

When the user has typed in 1 character to a textbox I want the focus
to move to the next textbox.
As I understand it, the textboxes are not siblings or consecutive
elements in the Dom (because each textbox is enclosed in a table
cell).

The following did not work!

$(document).ready(function() {
        $('.textbox').keyup(function () {
         if ($(this).val().length == 1) {
         $(this).next().focus() }
    });
    });
