polyrythmic, i checked with my server provider and it looks like i was running php4, so i changed that and got it to finally work. Although it only shaved off minimal time loading my page. I dont have that many js and css files so it might not be for me.
I think i just need to gzip the js files as they're 32KB. I tried vitormv's suggested code but the page didn't work and returned a server failure message? I'll keep searching and trying thanks to everyone for the help!!
