Try this.
 
$("div[id*=test]").hide();
 
The second attempt evaulates the text in the div. Not the id of the div.

<div id="test11">Test 11</div>

What is the syntax to hide all the DIVs that start with 'test'?

This doesn't work:

$("id*=test").hide();

also tried:

$("id:contains('test')").hide();
