This is not true:

"html link is always started before ajax/jquery"

your ajax request code runs before the browser tries to go off to
"about.htm", and there is a hook in there for you to prevent the href
action

$(".about a").click(function() {
      $(".jq").hide().slideDown("slow").load("about.htm");
      return false;
});
