Finally I uninstalled and installed Firefox again. Now jquery is
loading with Firebug fine.
Not sure which one of the following plugins prevented earlier:

Google Gears
GreaseMonkey
IE Tab
MeeTimer
Password Exporter
Pencil
ReadItlater
Regular Expressions Tester
Smart Desktop Connector
Smush It
Stylish
Wired Marker
YSlow
