Here's one way to do it:

<input type="button" id="submit_btn" value="Submit"/>

$("#ajax_form").validate( [set validation options] );

$("#submit_btn").click(function() {
     var valid = $("#ajax_form").valid();  // returns true or false
     if (valid) {
          // do ajax submission
     }
});
