you should change your html something like: <ul id="product_links"> <li id="first"><a href="#">FIRST</a></li> <li id="seacond"><a href="#">SECOND</a></li> <li id="third"><a href="#">THIRD</a></li> </ul> then in order to get the id of your li you can use the following code $('a', '#product_links').click(function() { alert($(this).parent().attr('id')); });
