Thank you Klaus

That worked like a charm. It is sad that I have to lose the cache on the
Tabs, but so it goes.

I think you need to set cache to false for ajax requests. You can
either do that in the tabs options or globally for all requests:

// just for tabs
$(function() {
    $('#staff_tabs > ul').tabs({
        selected: <?php echo $tab; ?>,
        ajaxOptions: { cache: false }
    });
});

// globally
$.ajaxSetup({ cache: false });

$(function() {
    $('#staff_tabs > ul').tabs({
        selected: <?php echo $tab; ?>
    });
});

Note that you don't need the call to the select method as you can
specify the selected tab right away.

http://docs.jquery.com/Ajax/jQuery.ajaxSetup#options

(Seeing this together I come to think, that I'll change the tabs
option name to ajaxSetup, but for the 1.6 release.)
