I'm not sure whether UI 1.5.3 is compatible with jQuery 1.3+ or not.
You should probably use jQuery 1.2.6.
Or switch to jQuery 1.3+ and the latest UI 1.6. Even the latest 1.6RC
seems to be working fairly well.
