Found a solution, or at least a work-around. Before, the droppable
DIV's (and thus the draggable DIV's in them) had variable widths, to
allow them to resize themselves as needed. I changed the droppable
DIV's to fixed uniform widths, and the draggables to slightly smaller
widths to fit inside them -- then this and other issues disappeared.
