Hey Johnny-

Well...First, I assume that you are using CFMX Enterprise - Professional
does not include a separate version of JRun.

Second, you need to have ColdFusion installed as a J2EE application on top
of JRun - it is an entirely different installation process than the CFMX
standalone. You might want to play around with this in a development
environment first (you can do this with the Free CFMX developer's edition).
It will require you to learn about deploying J2EE applications - not a bad
thing - and you have to install things like Verity separately.

Last, you do NOT need J2SDK. JRun will compile the servlets/JSP pages for
you. However, if you are going to be developing in Java, you will definitely
want to get a J2EE IDE. In the free realm, Eclipse (www.eclipse.org) is a
great tool. In the not-so-free, you will probably like IntelliJ IDEA or
there are even a number of IDEs out there that will make developing J2EE
applications easier now. I have reviewed a couple - including Sun Studio and
M& NitroX - at http://javaboutique.internet.com/reviews/ (scroll down to
Product Reviews)

Good luck!

Subject: JRun vs J2SDK?

This is a beginner question. Please don't laugh :-)

I am going to write a Java app. I have ColdFusion MX so I have JRun. I
don't know exactly what JRun does what I use it for. Can I use JRun to
compile my Java app or do I need to install J2SDK?

Johnny
