Its probably because JavaScript and V8 are on the hype currently. JS has been available server side in different implementations since Netscape, and as you said the event loop is nothing new. On the positive side though, perhaps it'll finally be a focal point for a more complete solution than its predecessors as a result of its growing popularity.
