I am developing a customizable merchandise site. What differs from each site
is the Category of items displayed, the items itself, logo, background color
etc. For example, company A may need shirts and caps on their site with
their logo while company B require Jackets and Jeans on their site. All the
sites have common information like shoppingCart, order processing etc.
I am planning to use JSP on IPlanet.I can read the customizable items (
background color, logo info, items, categories ) from a pre-defined database
and have JSP pages do the rest. What I am worried most is ending up with a
rigid system where by further customization is very limited. For example, if
a company does want a site slightly different than the "standard" one, it
would be difficult to implement without affecting the global model.

Any suggestions? I was thinking about using includes in a smart way to
achieve dynamic behavior in the jsp pages to avoid too many "if else"
blocks. Does anyone have experience in doing something similar to this? Any
alternate technical solutions?

Your help is very much appreciated.
