Hi,

I have to say, when I read Jims response I was rather upset that someone
would reply in such a manner. I have thus far only seen annoyances on
viruses and such on the list. I didn't realize that Jim and the PROs here
made this list closed to newbies, and when I joined I sure wasn't told about
looking in the archive first. If it is there, my apologies I must have
"overlooked" it..something some of us newbies do.

>Thirdly, about questions already been asked, well here is
>something to think about. The other day I got a haircut, and I
>asked a few people how it looked since it was a little different
>from my previous haircut. And I got many responses. I actually
>never heard the same answer twice. Everyone whom I asked had

>Everyone will give you a different answer, and there are new

Here here. I totally agree. I have seen a few people tell newbies to not
post questions already asked. I agree with you..why not? Its always good to
get a fresh perspective on a question. Furthermore, I dont know about
anybody else, but I have lately been replying to a number of
JSP/Servlet/Model 2 questions and would you believe that by answering
questions I am learning? The more I write about it, and code it, the more I
learn it, and become more profecient in it. I feel bad for anyone trying to
learn this having someone like Jim out there to shoot them down.

In response to Jim saying the senior advocates would leave because of this,
I think you got it wrong. The more you tell newbies to read an archive and
try to learn from that, the more likely they are going to leave. I hate to
say it, but I dont want to try to search through a huge archive of email
postings hoping to find a needle in the haystack for an answer. If I post my
question, I know the response I get are directed toward the question I
asked. Not towards someone elses "similar" question that may not hit the
mark for where my question is directed.

>So don't worry about novices Jimmy boy, no one is doing any
>"disservice" to themselves at all, i'm sure. Developers have
>deadlines, it's life. If you post a question on a site and wait
>for the answer, be sure to loose your job. And i'm sure there
>aren't any developers as ignorant as that, they will look for
>documentation while they wait, and maybe the question was only a
>'just in case' method, while they did their real research over the net.
>Now if you carefully read my previous email, you will see that I
>did agree on most comments about newbies asking questions, all i'm
>doing is asking you to empathize since we were all there once.

Maybe, like Daniel and Craig and a few others have done, a reply will come
back a few times a day!

Lastly, who is forcing you to read and answer the question? It does not hurt
anyone if you overlook it. Sure, you may be able to provide the answer, but
it wont harm you just seeing an email. If its the number of emails coming
in..well, filter them out, your a programmer, Im sure you can figure out a
way to do this. I have.

I too dont mean any disrespect. I just feel there are some out there, in
this case Jim, who feel they shouldn't have to answer these questions
because they were posted and archived before. I say, dont read it, or if you
start..stop, dont finish it. Just ignore it. No harm done, one less email
you have to send out like this one and piss someone off that asked the
question.

Hopefully this wont start some flame war.

For the original poster, I am sorry you have to go through this. Hopefully
it doesn't happen to every newbie asking a question.
