You can submit a form with an image link (no need of any JavaScript).

<form method="POST" action="servlet/fooServlet">
...
...
<!-- The following line is the submit button-->
<input type="image" border="0" src="next.gif" width="100" height="30">
</form>

I have been using these kinds of submit buttons without any image maps.
