Internal Overview of Java (JVM) Needed

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone knows of resources that explain =how= the Java
(virtual machine?) works:

e.g. what $CLASS_PATH does, what JARS are, etc. Basically an =internal=
overview of the Java environment. How things interact. I'm hoping this
knowledge will ease configuration issues when they arise for me.
