hi,
i don't think you will ever need to reboot your machine to start
tomcat on Linux. It is very easy to install tomcat. you only need
a few env. variables JAVA_HOME and TOMCAT_HOME. after that just
start the startup.sh of tomcat/bin and tomcat should be running.
to check whether it is up and running.....goto

http://localhost:8080/ unless you have specified some other port.

you should see the tomcat files...and some messages. voila.
to configure it with apache you just need to include the tomcat-apache.conf file in
the httpd.conf.
