>Is it possible to shut down the server from a servlet or something?

Hmm. Lots of answers.

The ultimate answer is "possibly," because there are too many things you've
left unanswered. For example:

When you say "server," do you mean the operating system? If the servlet
engine has root or Administrator privileges, then it's easy. If the engine
doesn't have administrator privileges, then it gets ... shall we say, more
interesting. At any rate, shutting the whole host down via a servlet is
kinda dumb, like "Let's see if I can run between the propeller blades on
this turboprop... while it's running."

If you don't mean the operating system, but you mean the servlet engine,
then again - "possibly." The easiest way on a less-secure server is to
execute "System.exit(0);" in a servlet or JSP. (Try it, it's fun!) You can
edit your JRE's policy file to prevent this... provided your servlet engine
is Java. Chances are that this behavior isn't what you want, too.

Hope I've pointed you in the right direction, for whatever your question was
supposed to mean. Did you mean you WANTED to do it, or wanted to prevent it?
I can't tell.
