The purpose was to find the byte length of a string.

Actually the requirement was like this:
When the user enters some data (in Japanese/chinese + english) and you want
to validate the maximum number of bytes user is allowed to enter then you
need to do this. Bcoz the MAXLENGTH attribute does not work in this case.
