Did you try explicitly setting the column widths in the table?

no it did not wrap and the column width was floating(it grew)  when
the data was a large string. i retrieve the data from a bean's
getproperty method.

Netscape supports the attribute NOWRAP for <TD> tag. Including NOWRAP
in your <TD> tag will not wrap the text, which ofcourse you don't
want, by default HTML will wrap the text, without you having to
specify....!
