I don't know either.
I do know that Lucene is used in jive (and that's rather good).
For my custom solution for simple to medium websites, I created my own
search engine options.
And I'm rather happy with it.
I store everything in a very flexible db structure and created a few custom
tags. I used it for some projects and it appears very easy to use. but it's
quite a bit to simply explain in an email ;-)
