Ok, the field returned from the database is a TEXT field , what I am looking
for is the display only the first three words of that text as a link, for
example :
StringTokenizer st = new StringTokenizer("the test string is simple");
          StringBuffer sb = new StringBuffer();
          int i = 0;
          while (st.hasMoreTokens()) {
          if (i >= 3)
          break;
          i++;
          sb.append("  ");
          sb.append(st.nextToken());
          }
          sb.append("...");
          %>

<td><a href='award.jsp?name=<sql:getColumn position="2"/>'><%=sb %></a></td>

So I got what I expected :
a link that say :
the test string
